ORIGIN OF THE FUND
In 2013, filmmaker Nanfu Wang went to China and made a documentary titled Hooligan Sparrow. During the process of making the film, she followed activists including Ye Haiyan (AKA Sparrow), Wang Yu, and Deng Chuanbin as they fought against the injustice in China. Wang observed that the children of the activists lacked financial support and education opportunities. Wang herself came from a remote village in China and didn’t have access to higher education when she was a teenager. With the knowledge that many Chinese human rights activists struggle to support their families, Wang established this fund in hopes that the children of these activists will have the opportunity to pursue education.
