Zoom Acknowledges Shutting Down Tiananmen Commemoration Accounts to comply with Chinese Censorship
Zoom acted under direct pressure from the CCP
What the statement says:
“We were notified by the Chinese government about four large, public June 4th commemoration meetings on Zoom that were being publicized on social media, including meeting details. The Chinese government informed us that this activity is illegal in China and demanded that Zoom terminate the meetings and host accounts.”
“As such, we made the decision to end three of the four meetings and suspended or terminated the host accounts associated with the three meetings.”
What we say:
It is irresponsible for the entire world to rely on a media platform willing to cave in to direct “demands” from an authoritarian regime. Zoom infringed on the human right of free expression of citizens in China and the United States on demand from the CCP.
Zoom failed to protect their Consumers’ Right to Free Expression
What the statements say:
“We must comply with applicable laws in the jurisdictions where we operate. When a meeting is held across different countries, the participants within those countries are required to comply with their respective local laws.”
Zoom claims “it is not in Zoom’s power to change the laws of governments opposed to free speech”
What we say:
Zoom might not be able to change the laws of tyrannical governments, but it has a duty to both morality and its customers to protect consumers from their abuses. Instead, Zoom has made it easier for the CCP to clamp down on free speech internationally.
Zoom is cracking down on Chinese Citizens’ Right to Access Free Speech
What the statements say:
“Zoom is developing technology over the next several days that will enable us to remove or block at the participant level based on geography. This will enable us to comply with requests from local authorities when they determine activity on our platform is illegal within their borders“
What we say:
Instead of defending the free speech of their customers, Zoom will now purposely develop technology to cut off the world’s largest growing internet market from real news and discourse with the rest of the world, acting on the whims of the CCP.
